IKEA VIKHAMMER makeover

I love a good IKEA hack or makeover!

This IKEA hack was borne out of a need for a luxe, minimal, sleek, functional yet affordable (Why are bedside tables so expensive?) bedside table. My bedside tables had to look good and have storage, which ruled out a lot of the nice-looking options I'd been eyeing.

I finally settled on a minimalist-ish white and gold style bedside table but as is often the case with me, my taste and my budget are frenemies. In my quest, I shortlisted some bedside tables but realised they were either the right height but not the right width or just too short and narrow. Enter the recently released (in Australia) IKEA VIKHAMMER minimalist bedside tables! I knew it was the one at first sight! With its sleek lines, minimalist contemporary look and soft close single drawer plus shelf, it was full of promise. The height at 69cm was perfect for our bed, the width at 60cm worked and with the help of my new best friend, Rustoleum pure gold spray paint, I knew I could upgrade it to my taste.

Below is my inspiration board for the makeover, they all look good but are too small for the space we have:

What you'll need:

1. Rustoleum spray paint in pure gold and clear

2. Brushed nickel round knobs from Bunnings - I spray-painted these gold

3. Command hooks strips - leftover from a previous project

I spray painted the frames gold following the instructions on the can, then sprayed the top coat and waited 24 hours for them to dry thoroughly. I must admit this wasn't my best spray paint job because I couldn't get a smooth finish everywhere on the frames but no one can see the flaws now unless I pointed them out.

The next day, I assembled the bedside tables, cut my command hooks to the size of the knobs, measured the drawer to find the middle and attached the knobs using the command hooks. Why command hooks you ask? Because I change my mind... a lot! And I'm pretty sure that these knobs will be changing soon. However, they are perfect for now.

The VIKHAMMER was very easy to assemble, and at $100, it's not the cheapest piece of IKEA furniture but similar bedside tables on my shortlist were $50 - $150 more expensive so I can't complain.

I took a photo of the room with the bedside tables and I am satisfied with how it fits in with the decor for now. Next purchase will be table lamps and decor.

How would you makeover the VIKHAMMER?
